On Teaching.

Teaching and sharing music is essential for an artist—it creates meaningful connections, reinforces identity, and enhances the social and emotional awareness and skills of both students and teachers. Working with NYC students from diverse backgrounds, I see how music helps them develop a strong sense of identity as well as cognitive, social, and cultural skills. Making a class engaging and exciting not only benefits the students but also motivates me to teach and influences my own artistic practice. Recognizing this positive feedback loop is truly inspiring

SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES

CUMBIA ROOTS

Martin Vejarano and his band, La Cumbiamba NY, introduce the evolving sounds of gaitas and tambores—an ensemble that originated in 17th-century colonial Colombia and continues to develop today. Cumbia Roots is a high-energy educational assembly designed to inspire students to explore their cultural roots and celebrate diversity through vibrant music and dance.

The program showcases the indigenous gaita flutes, Afro-Colombian drums, and the European influence on the singing, which is performed in Spanish. Students will experience the unique blend of these traditions, learning about the instruments’ origins and how they shape the rich sound of cumbia and Gaita music. Additionally, the musicians wear traditional attire, reflecting the cultural heritage of the music, and students will be introduced to basic cumbia dance steps for an interactive and engaging experience.
